*How to Create an EDU.Symbaloo.com Account

  1. Go to http://edu.symbaloo.com .
  2. Click CREATE FREE ACCOUNT in the top right corner.
  3. Fill out your name (as you want students to see it), email address, and password.
  4. Checkmark "I agree to Symbaloos terms and conditions and privacy policy."
  5. Click CREATE MY ACCOUNT. You will be sent to a page with 2 buttons, "Get Started with Your Webmix" and "Bring Me to the Quickstart". Don't click either, yet.
  6. Instead, go to your email. A verification email will be waiting. Click the "To verify your email address please click on this link! " in the email
  7. When you click the verification in the email, you will come to the "Get Started with Your Webmix".
  8. It will bring you to page to ask if you want to make it your homepage. Feel free to click the X to close the page. It is a good idea to bookmark in your browser, but it is up to you if you also want to make it your homepage.

  1. Click the "+" in the bar to the right of the webmix tabs.
  2. Type a name for your webmix. Make it simple. It will become part of your page's web address.
  3. Click the ADD button. You are ready add Symbaloo Tiles.

Add Symbaloo Tiles
The links in Symbaloo are called tiles each has a picture and a link to the webpage of your choice. You don't have to link to just the main page of a website, but straight to the exact page that you wish your students to use.
  1. Click in a blank space for a tile. A panel will open on the left.

  2. Click on the "Create a Tile" button. Screen Shot 2013-09-20 at 8.41.48 AM.png The panel to the right will appear.
  3. Type or copy and paste the address of the page for the tile in the URL box.
  4. Leave WEBSITE in the drop-down menu.
  5. Type a short name to add to the tile.
  6. Checkmark "Show Text" to have the name appear.
  7. Click on a tile background color.
  8. Add an icon to the front of the tile. You can either add one of Symbaloo's icons or upload a picture of your own.

      • Click "Choose Icon" button. A section will open to allow you to choose from the hundreds of preloaded icons that Symbaloo shares.
      • There are 5 different groups of icons in Symbaloo.
    • Upload an Image
      • You will need to have an image/picture on your computer that you wish to upload. You can use a screenshot of a part of the website to be its icon.

          • On an Apple computer, hold SHIFT and COMMAND keys then press 4. The cursor will become a crosshairs. Click and drag a box around the portion of the screen to be used as the icon. When you let go, a PNG file will be created on your desktop. You can quickly upload this file.
          • On a Windows XP computer, press PRINT SCREEN key on your keyboard. This will take a picture of the whole screen and copy to the clipboard. To make it into a file, open the "MS Paint" program. Paste the screenshot into it. Crop the rest of the page that you don't want to use away. Save the remaining part of the picture as either a PNG, GIF, or JPG. It is now ready to upload. Remember where you save it.
          • On a Windows Vista, 7, or 8 computer, use the program called "Snipping Tool" to select the portion of the screen you wish to make into the icon. Click SAVE. Make sure it is saved as either a PNG, GIF, or JPG file and that you know it's location.
      • Click "Upload an Image". A window will open in the middle of the screen.
      • Click "Browse".
      • Go to the part of your computer with the file to use as a icon.
      • Click to select it and click OPEN.
      • Click "Upload". The file will be uploaded to the small window.
      • Click and drag the box around the portion of the picture you wish to use in the icon. (This is similar to the method used for profile pictures on a popular social media site.)
      • Click orange "Use Selection to Tile" button.
  9. Click SAVE.


Share Your Links by Making the Webmix Public
Now that you have populated your webmix with tiles that link to the sites you choose, share them so students and parents can access them without changing them. Every webmix can be its own publicly shared webpage. You will just have to remember to update the webmix after you make changes so that others can see them.

  2. In the window that opens, click the orange "Share My Webmix" button.

  3. In the right half of the window, your shared mixes address will appear. It may be longer than the textbox. Double-click it to select the whole address to copy and paste to another place. You can also send an email to yourself with the address using the "Share Via Email" link and typing your own email address into the next box.

IMPORTANT: Your webmix changes will not show until you click the UPDATE Button. As you add, move, or remove tiles on this webmix, you will need to share the updated version of this page.

Share Your Links by Embedding It into Other Webpages
1. Click the share feature on your Webmix.

4. Select and Copy the code that looks like this:

5. To make the Webmix fit your page you can adjust the highlighted numbers until you get the size you desire.

For the CMCSS Teacher Webpage, change the width in the code to "550" so it will fit between the "About Me" section on the left and the "Classroom Expectations" and "Classroom Links" on the right.



*How to Add Your Symbaloo Bookmarks to Your Student Computers

Setting up Your edu.symbaloo.com Page as the Home Page on Student Computers
  1. Make sure you have clicked "SHARE" and "Publicly"on your webmix.
  2. Write down the address for the shared page. It should look like this, Screen Shot 2013-08-23 at 1.22.53 PM.png Your webmix's name will be in the blank. If it is a commonly used name, there may be addtional numbers at the end.
  3. On the student machine, open Safari and/or Firefox.
  4. Go to Preferences under the Safari or Firefox menu.
  5. Go to the General tab in Preferences.
  6. In the “Home Page” textbox, type the address above.
  7. Close the window.
  8. Repeat for all browsers and windows that you want to use your Symbaloo links.
